I really think we need to introduce loud whistling between verses for "Come on Vancouver"... and possibly even eliminate the drums from this chant.

I can't find a good video, but at one of El Salvador's World Cup qualifiers (I think), everyone in the stadium was chanting this, then sticking their pinky fingers into their mouths and whistling loudly. It was fantastic!

Unfortunately I'm rubbish at loud whistling. Maybe Ricardo Sanchez v.2.0 and his Cruz Azul-supporting buddy could help with that? Can anyone else do a loud and obnoxious whistle?

This (Vamos Chilenos) is an awesome song. I've actually had this tune in my head for a few months now. I can't remember where I heard it... possible El Salvador supporters singing it during the recent World Cup qualifiers, or perhaps some club at the CONCACAF Champions League.

You can't really hear it in the video, but when people whistle after the last word, it is tremendous. Unforgettable.

Hey guys... I know rap doesn't usually lend itself well to singing/chanting at sporting events, but the chorus to Eminem's 'Not Afraid' really caught my ear. The lyrics are reasonable right out of the box, but I'm sure they could be tweaked. Here are the lyrics:

I really like this because lyrically it's reminiscent of You'll Never Walk Alone, but more modern, but a lot of people, especially younger folk, will know the words and tune.

A lot of Madness tunes would be good to use. I always thought we could do something to One Step Beyond.

I'd love us to do something with "The Sun and The Rain", mainly cos that's one of my faves and it suits Vancouver weather!

At East Fife we used to sing a version of Baggy Trousers incorporating all the players. It was a fucker when some left as the new ones didn't fit into the song very well! We did a revamp three seasons ago but it was shit

^^ That's probably my biggest beef with The Maple Leaf Forever ... the chorus and the stanza before it are proactically identical. Personally, I'd use the tune for the opening verse and then the chorus. We can mess with the lyrics as needed.

I'd mentioned that one a while back in this thread (too lazy to search for you slamo ). They used it in Lyon for Junihno:

Although the Closing Ceremony for the 2010 Winter Olympics was, once Nickleback started playing, an unmitigated cluster-f**k, it did have one shining moment for me.

The Maple Leaf Forever. (sorry, this is the Ann Murray version fom the last game @ Maple Leaf Gardens. It was the clearest version I could find)

As for the "Eh, Oh! Canada Go!" campaign, it's quite embarrassing. Almost makes me want to buy tickets to a Canucks game for the Southsiders so we can show 'em what real chanting is.

Thanks for that John! I always wondered where the Wembley reference came from.

You've probably already done so, but it would be great to have those stories paired with their respective cheers for future SS websites. Actual history really helps add to the feeling of history for those of us who weren't there to experience it first hand.

Heh, good stuff there Richard. We're quite familiar with a few of those tunes, and we use them often with our own words.

"Que Sera Sera" has a special meaning for us here...

A few years back our pitch was absolutely mangled by a universityfootball match (as in American "throw ball" football) which was held after several daysof extremely heavy rains.

As good a tune as it is, I can't help but think that singing a song to the Mickey tune is a bit lame imo.

It's bad enough we're doing Backstreet Boys songs (although it is a hilarious song)! Keep that kind of stuff up and we'll be amusing all the other fan groups but not in a good way.

Things started really well. We were all together and repeated the chants over and over so people could join in. But by the 20th minute it all fell apart and there were multiple chants going on most of the time. I think the problem was people were so quick to break into new chants that as soon as one even started to die down another had started.

I found that sometimes I could really influence the winning chant because I can yell loud. If I liked one on my right, I could yell it real loud to my left and and change what was going on there. We were the decision makers....

It takes it's toll on my voice though.

Guys, we occasionally had three different songs going on at the same time last night.

Two ideas for next season:

1.) Main singers and drummers go in the middle of the section, and preferably some singers in front, and some in back. Having most of the singers toward the front doesn't help, if they're not prepared to turn their back to the match (which I'm certainly not).

2.) Don't start a song if someone else is already singing something. Listen out for songs on the other edges of the section before starting one up. Otherwise, it all becomes noise.

One of the best chants we had on Sunday was "Dig a hole and fucking bury him" when one of their players was on the ground injured.
The WAGs and Timbers supporters near us gave us horrible glares during that one

I'm surprised not to have heard the "Same old [insert rival team name here], always cheating!" chant. Simple enough though. But I propose 2 derivatives.

The simple one:

"Same old [rival team name], always cheating!" x3

The longer version: (ie. when an opposing player falls/dives)

"Look at [rival player's last name], always fallin'! Same old [rival team name], always cheatin'!"

you know guys, at first I scoffed at it too, but I really think after we chanted it on my balcony so all of the lower mainland could hear us I really think the chant Mass and I tried to start with teh "Zombie Nation, KErncraft 400" song could really work as a nice long filler chant that we could use as well as our Fox and setanta chimes...

IT is really easy when you think about it:

Oh-whoa-oh-whoa (oh-oh)

Oh-whoa-oh-whoa-oh-whoa-oh, whoa, oh, oh-oh

and just repeat until cows come home - or we dive into fox/setant/maybe even ST. Pauli chant

6 of us on my balcony belt it out along with Ole,Ole,Ole - Ooh ah Vancouver, and then finally my wife and I taught them the St.Pauli chant for over 20mins and it was awesome - we had folks on a neighboring high rise clapping to it (shoulda guessed since it had a brazil country flag on it ;)

Just throwing it out there - very easy two lines - even us late30-40 somethings had no prob to it. I won't snub it anymore if the caps play it on the PA I am starting itfor sure next Saturday - no reason not to and it is easy to fill in those 'dry chant moments really)

We used to have a chant against the refs that used the 'blame it on the rain' for bad offside calls, it was supplanted by the '2r's 4e's and 'stick that flag' chants - as well as the 'singing in the rain' ditty

The only doors one I could recall to date was the one we had for Steve Kindle 'comon' kindle light our fire!'

It would be good to work on more doors chants methinks... I'll mull some ideas and post them when I get a chance...

Yeah it's a cracker when we sing it. Can go on for ages and over and over too.

There's a lot of myths about why and when it started, but it's mainly thought to have started at a boring 0-0 qualifying game in Austria in 95 or 96.

The Tartan Army were bored and since they were in the home to a Sound of Music started singing this and then it became a staple of the songbook.

No relevance to football but people have tried to change it to make it football oriented but it usually just reverts back to the original.

There's a long history of Scottish clubs (and the national team) picking a song that has nothing to do with football and singing it for no apparent reason. At East Fife we sang "The Lions Sleeps Tonight" for years and it was nice to hear it in the Southside too. Made me feel even more at home!

We could try and adapt Doe A Deer to the Whitecaps with players names. Easy to do but maybe not easy for most to remember.

Talking of Scotland songs though, when we're in Portland we should enter the stadium singing "We'll Be coming" like the Scotland fans do (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECqR0lPJSyg). Change the lyrics to

We'll be coming

We'll be coming down the road

When you hear the noise

Of Vancouver's Southside boys

There's momentum right now though and the crowds are fairly good. If there was a way to put one song pamphlet every two or three seats and repeat it over a few games then I think people would join in. Specially now that Swangard is so small. The job would be a lot harder to do in BC Place.

So on the Vs board, Scottie (young kid from Calgary who came out for the Montreal Cup match) was mentioning something about the "I like to wank to mattandlaurie.com" chant. UM spokesman "Grizzly" came out and said that he thought the chant was grossly inappropriate for a variety of reasons which need not be repeated as anyone who's ever read a Grizzly post will surely understand. No I don't agree. I think that song is part of our future. I don't know how other people feel but I see that song being sung forever! I don't see why that song can't stand the test of time even if it is about the past.

West Ham's Song "Bubbles" has nothing to do with football, Westham, or in fact England, but they've been singing it since the 20's. It sends shivers up your spine when you go to the park. Know one actually knows why they started singing it. It just started and now its part of the fabric of the club.

Not that I wouldn't participate in any new songs because I certainly will. I assume that you are just excited about the future and that we can continue to create new and exciting chants that are simple/inclusive and that they become widespread and Im with you.

I guess Im just cautioning you not to give up on something that is already great and has some history.

I want a song that never has to be changed. It could be written in stone on a giant slab and placed wherever the Whitecaps call home and have it always be true. That's the kind of song I want to write, and thats the kind of song I want to sing.

Dave Morris had one thing most Caps players never have and he had it in large quantities: Consistency.

He was never the fastest, most talented, most aggressive, most anything, save consistent.

He was always run around, I think during his time here the only position he didn't play was keeper, and that he might have done had an injury or sending off call for it.

He went about his work, with extreme work ethic, and will always be lovingly referred to as a legend of the club by us SS'ers that watched him play for the time he had with the Caps.

always had a wave or a smile for us, always worked hard no matter which manager was giving him the runaround, and was always the first off the bench if he wasn't starting or hurt (Which he almost never was also)

It was a playoff match against Seattle at Swangard a few years back... this was back when the Sounders were damn near invincible.

We were down by one in injury time... and we were pressing and pressing and pressing...

Dying seconds (could not have possible cut it any closer)... a ball is played high into the six yard box, and Davey thumps it in with the noggin. Southside EXPLODES.

OT resolved nothing, so it went to PKs, which we of course lost. Come to think of it, we had a really bad stretch of consecutive playoff knockouts on PKs back then didn't we!

The Sounders promptly ran to the Southside to give us the finger. I believe Krammerhead has a photo of this.

I'm biased. I like the French (NOT Impact fans!) But the "don't copy Toronto thing" is reason enough for me.

The Juninho/Martin Nash chant works though. It ain't French, and it's damn easy to learn ... especially after a few pints.

I like the one above. I could see that sounding good. You can use it for any player and the tune is very catchy. I look forward to trying that one out at the next game.

A couple of chants from Lyon, which are appropriate since Canada is a bilingual nation.

1) Qui ne saute pas? N'est pas Lyonnaise!: Translates literally to "Who doesn't jump? Not Lyon!" Everyone jumps to the beat of the chant (duh!). Substitue "Whitecaps (UHHH)" for "Lyonnaise (UHHH)." That last bit will make more sense if you listen to the clip. This one is REALLY impressive in person.

I liked the Elvis tune as well, when you have folks joining in for the slower tunes it's immense! That's what I liked the most about the Spuds game I went to, when they did the slow version of "O When The Spurs Are Marching In".

For what its worth, as someone who hears and once in a great while joins the singing from afar, especially for Boundary Rd.

"Never walk alone" was once open to all (you can hear Sunderland singing it in the 73 FA Cup final), but it really isn't anymore, and I think the 20th anniversary of Hillsborough kinda amplifies that. It isn't the copying that's a problem, its just that for better or worse, that one is now so identified not just with one club, but with a tragedy involving that club, that I would find it a bit strange to hear it at a Whitecaps match.

But there's many good options - "You're just too good to be true" works nicely, and "Whitecaps" could easily be inserted in place of all the "baby" lines in the chorus. "I can't help falling in love with you" was once a Sunderland staple and would work well, too.

One other thing ... doing long, complex song is great, but you have to accept that there is almost always an inverse relationship between complexity and the quanity of people involved. I know "Let's Go Whitecaps" is very simplistic and very North American, but it also has a better chance than anything else of getting substantial segments of the crowd involved, and I don't think the value of that, just for the noise level it can create, should be dismissed out of hand. There's a place for both complex and simple. Hell, when I watch the games from England now, it seems like the most commonly sung thing is that "We're by far the greatest team the world has ever seen." That's no more than two or three lines and a clapping bit.

But I don't find myself in a real position to complain regardless. As long as it is loud, its good.

They all seem slow and pull at your heart strings type songs. They also seem to epitomize the clubs that sing them. They almost seem to be "The Song" for the club. Sort of the clubs theme song. When someone thinks of West Ham they think "Bubbles". I didn't ever think that you meant to stop singing Boundary Road. I just sort of feel that in terms of that type of theme song, the one that identifies others with the club that I wouldn't really want to sing a song that is so strongly identified with another club. I also personally feel like "Boundary Road" is that song for us. Just my opinion.

we also sang the st pauli chant as well, which is reasonably complex in terms of all singing the same thing so its not all 'nursery rhymes', the carol james song was sung because of the events of the previous week, i don't think it is what we are going to be about all season.
now if you wanna sing you'll never walk alone then you can, but lots of us won't.
That song is, and always will be, the song of liverpool football club, and also linked with Hillsborough etc. frankly when celtic or anyone else sing it, it sounds tacky.

Well you know if you go through the whole thread (all 9 pages) we've only used two suggestions that I can count (eyes of a stranger, and Carol James). Nothing new (for us) will ever be tried much less sung, unless it's perfect and 30 people agree. Somewhat frustrating to say the least. Not singing any song because Euro club x sings, or the club you follow dislikes the club where the song is used really has nothing do with singing it at Caps game does it?

Fine. 15 songs using London Bridge, and 15 more using Bingo is His Name-oh it is.

4 people sang the Argentina chant last game. It took co-ordination, change in pitch etc. Everybody sang Carol James. Kind of shows you where we are as a group on the difficulty factor.

We need to strengthen our Southsider songbook with more then nursery rhymes and children's tunes.

I suppose that to me "You'll never walk alone" is Liverpools song. Its the song I associate with them above all others and as someone else said its sort of a soft girlie song like "Blowing Bubbles". To me we already have a better song that seems to be more us. Boundary Road.

If your dead set on it I'll give it a go but something just doesn't seem right about it.

Agreed. I'd refuse to sing a Liverpool song.

And - I'm honestly not trying to make fun of it here - you have to admit, despite all its history as a football song, it's a pretty 'soft' song. It comes word for word from a musical, for god's sake, and it talks about sweet songbirds and being afraid of the dark. Sure, it's not as girlie as 'blowing bubbles' -- but it's not very far off.

Cool, so I'm just looking for options. I know what you mean about the "icky" part, but in some cases and not just with "You'll Never Walk Alone", people will have to put Euro allegiances aside and focus on the club in front, our Whitecaps.

On a side note, Ebbsfleet is about ensure safety in the BSP. Leading 2-0 against Weymouth.

Sure, Celtic also use it, but they wouldn't have adopted it if another British club had already been using it for several decades. Liverpool started using it in 1963 or 1964, and Celtic, Hibs, Feyenoord and FC Twente each followed shortly thereafter.

I kind of feel that we already have a song which is "the Song" for our club. Like Liverpool is known for "You'll never walk alone" I think we may one day be known for Boundary Road. I could see everyone in the stadium singing that one in the future.

Boundary Road take me home.

I don't know how others feel but its the song that I personally associate with the Southside and the Whitecaps the most.

By the way who was responsible for the lyrics?

Are you sure it wont be Jason De Vos who will be doing the co-commentary? You can sing as many songs about him as you like.

Craig was a good/great goalie depite that one blip, and I've met him personally a few times at supporters functions. To the majority it won't mean anything if you chanted 9-0!

The only thing, I'd chant is "Canada's Number One"

The best chants are player specific. My favourite is (to the tune of "one man went to mow.")

Or I made this up, somebody else could do a much better job, but i think something using this tune could be great.

Has anyone seen the books "Dicks Out" and "Dicks Out 2"?

They're UK books and they detail the songs and chants (and a lot of the history behind them) of loads of UK football teams.

Some good ideas to be had in there. Loads we can adapt and bring up to date. I just need to find time to go through them again.

I wrote the chapter on East Fife one's for the second book so obviously I'm biased as to whether the books are a good read or not, but if anyone wants to borrow them then just give me a shout.

Nice one - I think we sounded pretty good. Good job to tape this one, too - instead of the Carol or Darla songs.

A few of us headed to Earl's after the game, and the entire Richmond team walked in. I was tempted to start the 'We've all had Darla' chant up again, but Mass had the idea to send the keeper a shot -- so we did that instead.

i thought a lot of the chants were well sung last night, obviously the carol james one was a little coarse, but i think it represented how we feel about her...
i liked how we sang we don't need a roof, then it rained and it was carol, carol give us a roof. whoever started those, well done!
i think as long as we keep a balance between family friendly and the rude ones, we will be fine.

I hope those chants prove useful to start the modern twists for you guys to add. I'm agree with you on the swearing Rasta - it just kills the creativity. One of the reasons I stopped coming to the Southside (aside from being ridiculously busy and poor) was the fact that it was becoming more and more fractured by drunken idiots yelling all sorts of stupid stuff.

Things like "Hey Saunders, you're fucking terrible" and "I'd rather be a homo than a Yank" just don't cut it. Not only do they do the Southside a disservice by alienating people who want to be a part of the singing, but I would argue they don't even work to distract the other team as well.

I have absolutely no problem with swearing as long as it serves a purpose within the song. (ex: "Can you hear ____ sing")

I think I'm largely preaching to the converted on here, but perhaps if you see someone say something way out of line just tell them to tone it down a bit.

Anyways, I didn't know you gus started doing that St. Pauli chant last year. I've seen it before and thought it was fantastic but forgot to mention it on here. Have you managed to get people on the same page clapping together and do you do the transition to "That's the way we like it"?

There's another chant St. Pauli does that I thought Vancouver might be able to incorporate or modify. It's basically a song and response between the supporters and the team.

I know it's probably wishful thinking, but I think anything that makes the fans feel closer to the team is a positive thing and would in turn help the team by turning Swangard/BC Place/Waterfront into a fortress.

If that's not possible, the tune is still pretty sweet and if we could modify it and sing it between the west and East sides of the Southside.

The real effect with this chant is the movement that goes in time with song. Scarves or what ever you're wearing on your head have to move on this one.

a lot of these we still use though and the classics that get sung at the games most of them don't have swearing, and we have a lot more creative chants than TFC which there fav to sing is just TFCTFC woot, i want to do some southamerican chants because it sounds really cool.

i agree you don't want just constant swearing for the sake of it, i just don't believe we should make the whole chant thing family friendly, just becomes a little sterile.
