Author: Blue&WhiteArmy
Subject: Smoke Bombs and Chants
Posted: 01-August-2010 at 01:39

Just to be clear, in terms of my earlier comments about excessive chatting (and entire halves of matches being affected), I was not referring to the recent Minnesota match.

But yes, the second half was dead last weekend. There were fewer people in the Southside, and there seemed to be quite a few people standing at the northeast corner. Did some Southsiders go over there for the second half?

Making the trip over at half-time used to be a regular occurrence during the early years of the Southsiders. I personally found it rather irksome, as it split the group into two halves, and it was a pain in the ass to have to take flags down from the fence just before half-time was over (as it often took me that long to figure out about the migration).

I was actually under the impression that the stadium staff were not allowing people to stand at the northeast corner these days, because shouting from the northeast is clearly heard by the "VIPs" in the north end.

One person who was definitely absent in the second half was Masster. My understanding is that he left the match at half-time to join the TEAM 1040 studio for the 9pm Full-Time show. Now that's dedication: missing half the match just for the opportunity to plug the club on the airwaves - and the guy isn't even a staffer! I reckon the club owes Masster a bottle of his favourite poison.

The Southside allows me to be involved in the match as a 12th man. I'm not there to be a cheerleader trying to entertain other fans.

I didn't feel inspired during the Minnesota match in part because the players from both teams didn't offer us much in the way of exciting, competitive play. There have been too many nights this year with similar efforts yet the Southside have done well to keep the songs and chants going hard.

I've watched many MLS games this year that weren't all that good either. Low scoring, few chances, poor quality of play but the supporters , for the most part, are doing their thing and showing great dedication to their teams.

It is quite obvious that the fan culture in football in North America has caught on and growing. Many people want to be part of it and that is great. There isn't a club in the world though, who's supporters are loud 100% of the time and we are no different. Atmosphere is usually at it's peak for meaningful games. Promotion, relegation(which does not exist in North America) cup and derby matches etc. We don't get much of that here. Other than Portland,TFC,Seattle, maybe Montreal we don't have great rivalries. We don't get to see great players from the opposition. Despite all of the things that we lack in here North America I'd say that we've done one hell of a job with our support lately.
If you want to put on a show Matthew, Winger does take some nights off. I'm not their to entertain anyone, or be an attraction. If we as group help in the entertainment, it's because we're being ourselves. We don't owe it to anyone to entertain. We're not some Whitecaps sideshow.

Watching a Caps game is what everyone wants to do. When were cheering and watching the same thing?

Finally, IT"S SPILLED MILK...get over it. This kind of thing happens 3 or 4 times a season...we have absentees, we have people that may have guests at the stadium, people go on vacation. Some days things won't always come together. Having been around this group loosely for 4 years, and right amongst them over the last two, it happens. I wasn't even there for the second half of the Minnesota game, but feel that the complainers are turning this half into something bigger then it is. RELAX, it's supposed to be fun people (however you define it), not work.
Chatter is one thing but not for half a game. If people really don't want to watch the Caps then don't come. Conversations should be limited we're there to chant and put on a show. If you want longer ones, we have a tailgate, after the games, half time, etc. when a longer chat can happen.

However, this will be my last post on the subject.
