Two of the callers on Bill Good's show who support going forward with the roof were NDP provincial candidate Bart Healey and a fella from the Ironworkers union.

 Being discussed on 1040 now.

This may turn out for the worst, but Pratt, as usual is jumping off the bridge before the note has been written.

The minister says there's a small delay in bids. That piece of the project can't start for what, another year?

Is it a bit unnerving, especially in this city and with this government? Sure.  But it isn't the nightmare scenario just yet.

Think again.  Senior Vice President of Major League Soccer:

'All of the renovations to BC Place were key in Major League Soccer awarding Vancouver an expansion team," MLS senior vice-president Dan Courtemanche said from the league's New York headquarters.

"If things change, we'd have to address that. Clearly it's something that would be addressed by our commissioner and the league's board of governors," Courtemanche said.'

Nothing is going to happen to the Whitecaps MLS bid.  It will go ahead, donut hole or not.  I wonder though, if there could be some legal ramifications if the BC Govt doesn't re-do the roof as originally planned.

Being the pessimist I am, even I don't see MLS booting out the Whitecaps (it's no longer a bid-they already got accepted).

As has been mentioned, quite a few teams are playing in sub-par stadiums at the present.  I know that a few are awaiting new homes, and that is essentially what the Whitecaps will be doing if BC place renovations are on hold.

Why would we want to leave it up to MLS to decide?  We have practically no say with MLS & Garber, but at least we have a chance to influence our own government before they publicly announce the cancellation of the retractable roof and post-Olympic renovations.  As for the MLS, we know this:

1) San Jose was a great soccer market but had an insufficient stadium according to MLS & Garber.  The board of governors and Garber did not hesitate to axe San Jose despite the fact that San Jose was (and still is) a great soccer market.

2) There is no guarantee that MLS will return to us in a timely manner if we lose our spot.  Yes, the MLS returned to San Jose because an investor was found, but look at Miami.  MLS still likes the Miami market, as proven with the near bid of Barcelona FC before the recession hit.  However, Miami has been out of the MLS for 8 years though and they're still waiting.

3) Everything is off the table because Montreal is in the equation.  Comparing our situation to when San Jose lost their franchise to Houston, I would say Montreal is our Houston.  The problem for us is, Montreal has a SSS ready that only requires a $25 million upgrade whereas Houston didn't.  With Montreal climbing on Garber's doorsteps, it makes it so much easier for Garber & the board of governors to give up our spot to Montreal in 2011.  In the case that we do lose our spot, we would better hope we end up like San Jose, rather than Miami.

Have you seen where San Jose is presently playing while waiting for their stadium to be built?  10,300 seat capacity Buck Shaw stadium.  Not exactly big league.

Lets look at Kansas City Wizards.  Currently playing at Community America Ballpark.  Capacity 10,385 with a baseball configuration.

We already have investors (owners).  We definitely have a stadium that is superior to the two I mentioned (and lets not forget Giants Stadium or Gillette stadium with their NFL football lined pitches late in the MLS season).

There's no reason why the MLS will turn down the Whitecaps expansion fee just because these upgrades to BC place stadium might not be done.

The Sun's Miro Cernetig (who's pretty informed on such things) has a very interesting article in this morning's paper. It outlines many of the options the government might be considering.

Not one of the options he mentions involves leaving the Caps and MLS high and dry.

A couple of my neighbours (elderly, English, footy fans from WAY back) and I were discussing many of these options just yesterday.  P3 or not, the waterfront stadium is the perfect out for all concerned.

Is it...?? It doesn't do anything for the Lions and at any rate I doubt the Caps want to share the facility with them and have 300 lb football players tearing the crap out of the grass. Assuming they want real grass and not field turf of course.

The Lion's weren't asking for the retractable dome.  If the Whitecaps could have it built, then great.  But the Lions will play at BC Place regardless.

The Waterfront Stadium isn't for the Lions anyway.  Maybe as a short term solution if BC Place gets demolished, but not long-term.  Besides, how is sharing the Waterfront Stadium any different than sharing BC Place?

Really? The Lions, or at least their fans and sports journalists have been pushing a retractable roof since before Kerfoot even owned the Whitecaps.

Also when the waterfront stadium was first announced I believe the Lions liked the idea except it meant they could no longer host the Gray Cup.

I misunderstood part of your post. I thought you meant have both teams play outta Waterfront.

If BCP stays put as is and Caps get Waterfront...great! It would be unfortunate if the retractable roof doesn't get built,  but it's tolerable. We've lived with it this long after all.

There are a couple issues with the Caps and Lions potentially sharing Waterfront Stadium.

*** As I stated earlier...wear and tear on the grass. Did you see what SFU football did to Swanny last fall? Bloody field looked like a cow pasture. Angry

And I want REAL GRASS at Waterfront if it gets built. I don't want a field turf compromise because the Lions are also playing there.

*** Waterfront Stadium (or at least the version we've seen on the drawing board) is too small for the Lions. They need 30,000 seats MINIMUM and even at that they wouldn't be hosting any more Grey Cups in a stadium that small.

I don't work for the Lions so I can't say 100% one way or the other.  But the retractable dome only really became a "serious" issue once the Whitecaps MLS bid came into play.

I think a retractable dome would be AWESOME.  But I would trade it in a heartbeat for the waterfront stadium.  Watching a 'Caps game during a September downpour would bring back memories of Empire Stadium Big%20smile

^ I disagree. I think the retractable roof only really became a reality when certain politicians wanted it to happen. Due to the momentum from the Olympics and the then good economy they saw a chance to shape Vancouver from where it is to a world class city.
