My Biggest pet peeve in the SS is the random songs that get sung at some times... Like the ode to Caleb patterson (She Likes it Nicks way, Tell me why!?) ... it was attempting to be started for the keeper in the Portland game... it makes no sense, it's out of context etc...

Or the Can you hear so and so sing.. that drives me nuts...

I like the organic/creative etc but all of this makes me think we need a capo/song leader, and perhaps more as we grow...

My Suggestion: Unless it is a no brainer and an existing song... run in by a few guys and start with three or four voices, just letting fly with something on the top of your lungs by yourself doesn't add anything unless three or four words in you get some other voices behind you. Going to guys like JoMo, Shane, Mass, GoF, Tractor and get three or four voices together to start a chant.

randomness kills my experience.

My Humble $0.02 on the matter in line with what Markus posted.

I'll most likely will be joining a sub group since I personally hate the British atmosphere. so thats just what I feel.
For there not a team like the Glasgow Rangers , no not now and there never shall be
one!.... except for the caps.

You know its all fine and good to say only a few guys should start chants, or they might get started out of tune but who cares? The point is to cheer on the Whitecaps and when those guys aren't there and somewhere else we still need to chant. The atmosphere was flat last game, come on we can do better than that.

Edit: Honestly it's fine to say we should sit back and do nothing but the point of the Southside is that all are involved and able to start chants. If people don't like it maybe they should sit on the sides and chat there.

Until we get formal capos, people are going to start chants spontaneously.  Deal with it, people.

The introduction of a capo might help, however until such time as somebody ACTUALLY does it, it's moot. What happened to the traditional, let it fly at the game and we'll see how it goes. If people like it, they'll join in. I thought organizing was about tradition? That seems to have gone all to hell. There's no reason that chants can't be modified or used for other players. Look at the recycling of Wes Knight Tonight/ It's Gonna Fine Night Tonight.  And even the ode to Caleb Patterson, if you only use the first part it doesn't matter. You can also change the last line. This is called versatility and using the creative mind. If you don't want to join in a chant, that's fine. I don't join the ones that I don't agree with. However, that's no reason at all for people to not to be allowed to start chants. Besides, a lot of the chants that people don't seem to be in agreement with are being chanted by several people, not just one. If you don't like that some people are doing that, then start your own. But the day that someone tells me that I can't start chants (not I often do) is the day that this organization no longer holds meaning for me because it's gotten so far away from how it was when I joined.

Grandstander - Yes, just enjoying the game is good, but then I might as well sit in the grandstand with the soccer moms and their capo, Winger.

Capsfan ... versatility and spontaneity is all well and fine, but it's just not possible with more than a handfull of people.  A supporters' end in Empire without a capo = chaos.

I'm not saying anyone isn't allowed or shouldn't be allowed to start chants, I'm just saying think about it for one second and then get a few in cahoots with you so it doesn't come off as weird... remember a few of us have a few pops pre-game and just cuz something sounds good in YOUR head doesn't mean it will always flesh out into something useful, witty, funny or good.

On the Ode to Caleb Paterson... this shouldn't be recycled.. it makes ZERO sense and is out of context... It is a bad and not clever at all use of the Eff word... it's only funny because it's sung to the tune of a backstreet boys song, and Nick Carter was/is a BSB... and his GF left him form Nick Carter...

Screaming "You're such a f&^king loser! Tell me WHY-EYE!?" is just bad... not clever or tongue in cheek, unless i's unleashed on the intended target.

Having fun chants is cool, recycling chants and songs you like just because it's a fun ditty means nothing to me, especially if it's out of context.

Capo's or Bandleaders will HAVE to be a staple come anywhere out of Swangard... it's just not possible, it's already difficult enough to decode when two small sides of the SS at Swangard start two at the same time... double the size of the group and it's exactly what BG said: Chaos.

I'd disagree with that, and not taking away from JoMo.

The game he was away for last week or two weeks ago the atmosphere wasn't too bad... where the latino guys showed up for "this is our f*&king beach" song... In fact I thought it was pretty good.

Portland had a number of Capos at the game we went to the other week, and even they are having problems with them if you read their board.

Who would want to be a Capo anyway, would you have to be wired to the other Capo(s)?. I don't really fancy missing the game because I'm the capo, but if we all do it on a rotation basis it could work.

It's just not the culture I was brought up in, but I'm willing to adapt.

People should chose if they want to sing, not be forced to imo

That was the Miami game, and give credit to Steve (slamo) who parked himself in the middle of the bleachers and belted our cheers out loud and clear, and in tune.

@ Capsfan & 86er...

You want credibility look organized, not being so does just as much harm IMO as it does good. Random noise is not better than no noise at all.

The people on the fringes of the bleachers we stand on could be members, unless we act disorganized and say off color things that make no senses, and at the wrong time to boot. Being organized and loud 10 times a game will do more for our cause than random mumblings from one side that the other side can't hear, 30 times a game.

At any rate, do what you want (everyone), that's what I'm doing (and that's what I see a lot of others are doing)...for now.

This thread has already gone on long enough with nothing concrete to come of it.  It'll all happen next year...I hope.

Bit of a straw-man argument, Chris.  I don't recall anyone in this thread suggesting that everyone has to sing.

What I recall is that some people think 90-minute gossip sessions are irritating to those wanting to create atmosphere, and that such activities are better off taking place at the tailgate, in the grandstand, or at a pub.

We all chat - myself included - but if people have no intention of chanting at all, why are they in the Southside?  They're watering down the group's effectiveness at best, and at worst they're interrupting it.

I'm thinking this whole thread is based on a long line at the concession stand and 10 minutes of boring soccer to start the 2nd half.  Combine that with a couple of misplaced chants that only a few people started singing that faded out before they ended and we have some hurt feelings.

All I got to say to that is "hardin' the fuck up mate".

Thanks for the shout out for the Miami game GS.  I took it upon myself when I saw many regulars were missing, but I did cue each chant with the people around me to make sure I had a crew that wanted to sing that one.

Anyone who thinks the TA outdid us last week clearly missed the game.  That has to be bitterness speaking.  I stood on the left post for two years and sang by myself most of the time because of my young one and it was super annoying over there with all the chatters and their ladies. Then I realized...hey, I can move and so I did.

Anyway, most times the team is going to be lifted by us and sometimes they can do their part no?  I've said in previous threads that I'm not into the negative..."you guys are sucking" thing like at hockey games.  I think my silence speaks volumes and I have every right to say nothing when there is nothing to be said.

And the last piece of my rant is that I am with those of the mind that a chant needs to be well placed and timely.  We don't need a goal 8 minutes into the game when the players haven't even started sweating yet and silence allows for whimsical remarks. Like "you still suck VanOetten..." and my personal favourite from the first meeting with Montreal after a chant of "Saputos' chees is sour" when someone sheepishly got caught while the crowd went silent half way throught the sentence "just like Laurie's p***".

Okay, I lied one more thing.  Everyone should feel free to belt out a tune...hell sing it yourself if you think its clever.  I think Gof has invented several that I'm sure he was praying someone would join with such as the timeless "she likes to suck cox".  But don't feel bad if no one joins...maybe it'll catch on next time.

Kudos to slamo, as he is easily the best new set of pipes in the Southside. I looked at the photos of Portland away, and his gob seemed to be the only one wide open in every single photo.

We do need more songs, I suppose. I can't be arsed researching/writing them anymore, though - I did my bit back in 2007/2008. Time for other people to put the time in. It doesn't take much to dig up old EPL ditties and re-do the lyrics.

Goalkeeper research would be good as well. Unfortunately I haven't got the time for this anymore either, so hopefully someone new will pick up the baton.

@ Slamo Clap

Just my two cents.

I've managed to go and watch football and sing and chant since 1984 without the need for a Capo, but if that's what it takes here then I'll go with that but they shouldn't call the shots all the time.

I've never understood why anyone would want to do that as you miss the game though! I also think it's pointless. Much like an orchestra conductor. Does anyone actually pay any attention to him?

I think everyone should be able to start a chant whenever it goes quiet or at an appropriate time. When did we become chant nazis?

I blurt out random ones I've brought from my Scottish songbook all the time and I'm not likely to stop Capo or no Capo (I have a lot more still to be introduced!!!). As soon as we start to become too regimented that's when we lose members, we lose our wit and it's not fun any more. FUN is the key word here.

What is good though (as others have said), is to have a word with the guys around you if you can and say I'm going to start this etc etc, and then there's more than one voice taking part. Guys do that all the time just now - "Boundary Road next", "ok".

All that said, here's my pet peeves.

I love Chinese Southsider's enthusiasm and you know, for all his knockers out there, the last two games he's been one of the guys responsible for us actually having an atmosphere. Great effort, Matthew Clap

But, you need to slow down mate. You're starting the songs at too quick a pace and they're coming out like machine gun fire one after the other. And it's not just him.

We need to slow some of the chants down a bit. I know it's excitement and enthusiasm but people are less likely to join in when it's like that. It also means we rattle through stuff way too quickly and our songbook is finished 15 minutes into the game.

We need more chants, that's a given. We do also need to be more selective as to when we sing certain stuff, as has been said.

I like amending chants for the occasion. Only exception is the BSB one. We should NOT be known for singing Backstreet Boys stuff on the terracing! LOL

We also seriously need to work on being in tune. I don't know if some of the UK ones have just been bastsardised and become the norm but there's a few where we're nowhere near what the actual tune should be.

Like it or not, a lot of the new crowd we're going to get are going to be UK ex pats or those used to watching the EPL. They're automatically going to be drawn to the Southside and I think these guys will be the ones that shape where the groups, the songs and the style goes come MLS.

Your comment about "not the culture I was brought up in" speaks voumes to me.  You grew up in a culture where chants, songs etc were spontaneous (I'm assuming, so correct me if I'm wrong) and nobody needed to be told or coached.  You just wathed and learned and eventually figured it out.  Others were there to show you, and soon you were able to show the new folk.

I did not grow up in such a culture.  You just have to go to a Canucks game to see how I learned how to cheer.  So for me, a capo is helpful.  I wouldn't want someone telling me each ad every cheer.  But when energy was low a capo could help things along.  The best would know the majority of cheers and have a good sense of club history and the opposition to keep things relevant.  And if something spontaneious occurred from the masses (or masster) then he just needs to go with it.

And yes, they switch up throughout the game ... or at least they did during the matches I saw in Seattle and Lyon.
