There's been some talk of us putting something on during the 5-week break that would be a "family friendly" sort of event.
We're looking for suggestions for a location. It should: a) be reasonably close to transit b) permit the use of BBQs c) preferably have a playground for the kiddies (or something else for them to do) Open to suggestions! |

LOL!
I agree with JR. I would assume this event will probably be short notice for a lot of people. So what ever date is picked I guess we should just live with it if we can or cannot attend. This thread could go on forever if everybody's preferred date and time were taken into account. |

I don't think we would be doing this for at least 2 or 3 weeks. Hopefully that's sufficient notice for most people, although I can appreciate that it's summertime and people may have plans.
One thing I was interested in doing was taking a look at another park to mix things up a bit, particularly if there was a suitable park near Empire. I haven't been to New Brighton Park or Callister Park.... can anyone tell me what they're like? I was thinking that we could also organize a pre-BBQ fact-finding mission (ahem - a quickie pub crawl) for the non-family types so that we can get some opinions on places like Oscar's, The Press Box, etc before meeting up at the park. |

If possible I'd like to combine with an away game. Maybe someone (possibly me) can load a 32" into the back of their car, with a wireless internet stick and run it all off an inverter.

The biggest issue with New Brighton is parking ... and lack of transit. You can get a bus to Cassiar and Hastings, or somewhere along McGill (just guessing on that part) but you'd be walking in either way. Parking is really poor unless you're there early. I'll see if I can get by Callister this week. Keep in mind, Callister is beside the Coliseum, and the PNE starts in a few weeks. Edited by Bad Gones - 27-July-2010 at 20:11 |

Yeah New Brighton is a mare. it is always busy and as Arne says the parking is horrible. If we wanted a park near Empire, I'd suggest Rupert. There is a kids playpark, and a trail if anyone brought their dog, and a 9 hole golf course. We could have a mini competition! Downside is the nearest skytrain is Rupert and you need to take the 27 from there (or Joyce) to the park. Buses run 15 mins during day on a Sat and every half hour on a Sun. It is just off Highway 1 though for those driving.
It's a 15 minute walk to Empire. I've thought it might be a good place for us to tailgate as we can park easily there and should be left alone and then can do a march to the match. Other parks (which are even further removed from Skytrain) could be Pandora (which can be scary!) and Hastings Community Park. |

Is there an area in Rupert with shade for the fair skinned amongst us, which could also double for shelter if the weather gods don't co-operate?

Yup. There is a tree area near the kids playpark (although I'd much rather not be beside the kids as I hate the little fuckers!
I would need shade though too obviously and Devon!
I could probably get a couple of tents from work for us to use and if Slamo reads this, sssshhhhh. I also have a gazebo sitting under my stair (it's not made up!
One of the tents fits in my car, the other I'd need someone to pick up from my office.

No particular reason not to go to Swanny... jsut thought I would throw it out there to the family folk to see if there was someplace better to to take the kids, possibly near Empire. If Swanny is the preferred choice, that's what we'll do.

Arne is right. My wife's family has done more than a few family gatherings at New Brighton, and if it's a decent day the park and pool is busy, you need to physically get rental permits for the picnic tables and parking is diabolical to say the least.
not to piss on the campfire so to speak. Edited by JohnnyRanger - 28-July-2010 at 15:26 |

You're right Morb, but the buses only go by every 30 minutes, and the transfer points aren't that great. Keep in mind that while I take transit a lot, if there's more than 2 transfers (not including Skytrain) I'm driving!
